  • Down syndrome is a common genetic condition caused by an extra chromosome 21.
  • Every person with Down syndrome is an individual. Just like everyone else they will have different things they are good at and other things they may need support with.
  • People with Down syndrome may have some characteristic physical features, increased risk of some health conditions (many of which are treatable), and some developmental delays. Some level of intellectual disability is the only feature common to all people who have Down syndrome.
  • People with Down syndrome lead inclusive, fulfilling lives. They will go to mainstream schools, get jobs, live independently, have relationships and get married. Supports are available for people with Down syndrome and their families and for expectant parents who have received a diagnosis of Down syndrome for their unborn child, including supports from their local Down syndrome association, from the NDIS and other government supports.
