  • An arrhythmia is an abnormal heart rhythm, where the heart beats irregularly, too fast or too slowly.
  • A palpitation is a short-lived feeling of your heart racing, fluttering, thumping or pounding in your chest.
  • An occasional palpitation that does not affect your general health is not usually something to worry about. But if it is occurring more often then you need to see your doctor.
  • You can manage an abnormal heart rhythm by identifying your triggers, taking medicines as prescribed, making healthy lifestyle changes, managing blood pressure and cholesterol levels and maintaining a healthy body weight.
  • If you ever feel pain or discomfort (pressure, heaviness or tightness) in your chest, neck, jaw, arms, back or shoulders, or you feel nauseous, a cold sweat, dizzy or short of breath for more than 10 minutes, call triple zero (000) immediately and ask for an ambulance.
