  • Children’s responses to distressing events depend on their age and stage of development, previous experiences, the current situation and the impact of the crisis on their parents and significant others.
  • Children will realise that something is wrong, even if no one in the family talks to them about it. If they aren’t given the facts, they will fill in the blanks from their own knowledge, experiences and imaginings often this will cause distortions.
  • Sometimes distress reactions may surface weeks or even months after the event.
