Description

Myotherapists practise myotherapy – a form of physical therapy used to treat or prevent soft tissue pain and restricted joint movement. Myotherapy is founded on Western medical principles including anatomy, physiology and biomechanics.

Services provided

  • Identifying the cause of muscle pain
  • Treatment of pain caused by muscle tissue, tendons, ligaments or muscle fascia using:
    • Trigger point therapy
    • Dry needling
    • Massage
    • Hot and cold therapies
    • Stretching
    • Electro-mechanical stimulation
    • Exercise

Eligibility

Appointments may be made directly without a doctor's referral.

Costs

The cost of myotherapy varies depending on the provider. Contact the service before you attend if you would like more information about cost.

Myotherapy fees are not covered by Medicare unless your myotherapist is also a general practitioner.

Myotherapists can choose to become a member of the Institute of Registered Myotherapists of Australia.

Minimum qualifications

The minimum education requirement for a myotherapist is an Advanced Diploma in Remedial Massage (Myotherapy).

Tip

  • Myotherapy treatment can be used if you are experiencing aches and pains, but can also be used to prevent injury.
  • You could see a myotherapist if your pain lasts longer than a few days, or if you are suffering from restricted movement.
  • Take results of any tests with you (such as x-rays, ultrasounds, MRIs).

Important

  • Always tell your doctor before starting a program of complementary medicine and never stop taking your conventional medicine or alter the dose without the knowledge and approval of your doctor.
  • A sign of a good myotherapist is membership with a reputable professional body, or being eligible for private insurance rebates.
