Studies show patients who are treated at home have better health outcomes because they sleep better, stay socially connected and are more active. For example, patients who receive hospital care at home tend to recover faster because they move more and spend less time in bed.
Care at home means getting better in your own bed – close to family, friends, and pets. It can make a world of difference to you and your family if you can avoid the hassle of travel, parking, and visiting hours, and being alone in hospital.
Types of home-based care
Victoria has been a pioneer and leader in the delivery of hospital care in the home for more than 25 years and is extending its home-based care across the state through the Better at Home initiative.
A range of hospital services can be delivered in the home, including:
- chemotherapy
- rehabilitation
- peri-operative care, for patients recovering from surgery
- maternity care, for (and following) low-risk deliveries
- care for patients with infections and diabetic wounds
- care for a range of chronic diseases, such as cystic fibrosis
- geriatric care for people with medical conditions related to ageing.
You won't pay any more for care at home. Your hospital will provide the nurses, doctors, equipment, and resources needed to give you the same safe, high-quality care you would receive in hospital.
Your healthcare team may also be able to help you organise specialist appointments using telehealth so you can consult on your needs via phone or video.
Where to get help
Care in the home will only be offered to you when it is a safe appropriate option for you and your personal circumstances.
